Matt Mays has been shaking up his own sound and showcasing his versatility since the release of his 2017 album Once Upon a Hell of a Time… and the 2018 acoustic version of the same album a, Twice Upon a Hell of a Time…. It’s the whole premise of his Howl at the Night tour which will be giving audiences across Canada a taste of both sides.
Ahead of the tour he’s released a brand new pair of singles to emphasize that dichotomy. Working with Matthew Angus of Fast Romantics, Mays hits hard on the dance beats for “Let There Be Love” and then pivots for an acoustic version that’s almost a completely different song.
Mays, like most of us, is doing his best to cope with the world in 2019. “Let There Be Love” is Mays’ acknowledgement that sometimes the best way to deal with the world is to close your eyes, tune the world out, and dance your cares away. And if that fails, there’s the acoustic version of the song, which has been tastefully crafted to cry yourself to sleep to.
“I feel like a lot of people around me have been feeling a little lost and scared lately. I’ve been feeling the same way. It breaks my heart to see such true people sad,” says Mays. “This new song ‘Let There Be Love’ is about finding the courage to love yourself blindly and learning to accept this self-love trustingly. It’s a dream of letting the bad things be and just basking in the beauty of this little weird thing we call life.”
Matt Mays embarks on his The Howl at the Night Tour, beginning in British Colombia and wrapping up in Atlantic Canada, starting October 21, 2019. The tour also features performances from special guest (and one of our new favourite acts this year) Skye Wallace.
