If you’re reading this, and it’s a near certainty that you are doing so through the magic of technology, then Jennah Barry has a message for you. Her latest single, “The Real Moon,” is a gentle tongue-lashing, delivered in Barry’s vintage tones about the rather contemporary problem of getting lost in the glow of a screen.
The single, which is the second to be released by Barry under Forward Music Group this year, was produced by Colin Nealis (Andy Shauf, Aidan Knight). Similar to Barry’s previously released single “Roller Disco,” “The Real Moon” is a song divorced from time. Despite the modern subject matter, the anachronistic tune is more akin to the musical styles of Burt Bacharach or Sten Getz; all nylon strings and softly punctuated by a horn section.
It’s all very suitable for a song that throws back to an era when people were often required, and even expected, to engage in a more analogue fashion.
“I was spending most of my time alone when I wrote ‘The Real Moon,'” says Jennah Barry. “The song is about the very modern problem of seeing too much of the world without actually leaving your house. It’s about experiencing the fragility of reality.”
Barry’s lyrics imply a world of distraction, inauthenticity, and disconnection and the damage done to our social habits and relationships. “Did it happen if nobody saw? A whole life in a tiny box,” she sings while advocating for putting in some facetime with “The Real Moon.”
Fortunately for you, dear reader, her new single is now streaming on all platforms. But, if you insists on a more analogue experience, Jennah Barry will be performing at Halifax Pop Explosion and Nova Scotia Music Week.
