Andrew Waite is playing Pepper’s Ghost with the streets of Halifax for his newest video, “Faith”. Working with choreographer and dancer Claire Newbery, Waite gets into the small moments of the day that compound to form a sense of liberation all while dashing across Halifax.
Taken from his 2018 album, Tremors, Waite blends a BPM suitable for your morning jog, with some classic rock riffs on the chorus. It’s a little something old and a little something new and a bit like if Paul McCartney had retooled Wing’s 1974 hit “Jet” for a completely different subject matter.
“‘Faith’ is sort of a song about self-realization, and self-reflection about hope, I suppose,” says Waite. “When I wrote the song I had this idea of the personification of a person’s faith in themselves – a confidence in themselves that they’re longing to have in their life in a positive way, but maybe is distant to them.
Waite brought in Branden Henry of Minotaur to work his magic on the video. Henry had previously shot Waite’s video for “Out & Out”, which had Waite and his band playing to an ethereal mist without ever having the band members step into the same room for filming.
“Faith” also has some illusionary imagery, with Newbery strobing across Halifax like she’s the mystical offspring of Jaime Sommers and Alex Owens.
“I think the video captures aspects of the song in a way – Brendan Henry, who directed the video, pitched this idea of the dancer envisioning herself dancing in this epic choreographed fashion – but the dance is happening in her head,” says Waite. “So, I guess I see the video as her wanting to be the dancing version of herself; completely free, full of joy, and full of faith in who she is and wants to be.”
