Rosemary Lawton continues delving through the Newfoundland’s rich repertoire of traditional folk tunes, this time working with rising blues rock star Nick Earle on “The Golden Glove.” The English folk tune pulls from a deep history with a diaspora (and subsequent series of reinventions) that spans the United Kingdom, Ireland and Newfoundland.
The song has also gone by the names “Dog and Gun” and “The Squire of Tamworth.” It’s a tale of a nobleman’s daughter who falls in love with a young farmer just as she’s to be married off to the local squire. Experiencing a crisis of heart, she instead runs off for an inverted Cinderella adventure by not-so-casually taking to the fields with her hunting dog and gun with the expectation of running into the farmer. It’s a classic romantic tale of boy meets girl with firearm.
The first known appearance of the song appears sometime between 1777 and 1779, written into the songbook of Timothy Connor, an American prisoner-of-war in Portsmouth. It first appears as a field recording of in 1952, with John Pennington singing “Noble Young Squire.”
Recorded, co-Produced, engineered, and mastered by Citadel House’s Dean Stairs, “The Golden Glove” has Lawton singing and fiddling away to the folk tune while Earle provides a some punchy rhythm guitar. It gives a good sense of what to expect from Lawton as she’s about to embark on a western tour via Home Routes.
