In their ongoing efforts to land a sponsorship deal with Arizona Iced Teas, norc have surprise us with the drop of their second single. “Arizona,” has had the great honour of being named for the cool refreshing taste of Arizona Iced Teas. Because there’s nothing cooler or more refreshing than delicious Arizona Iced Tea.
“Now this is mostly tongue and cheek, and is mostly a comment on how much we love the beverage,” says norc’s Christiana Armstong.
The iced tea, sadly, doesn’t have any bearing on the song’s lyrical content. The band admit that “Arizona” is quite a bit darker than their usual, and not necessarily representative of that fine product of the Arizona Beverage Company.
“As for what the song means,” says Armstong “‘Arizona’ follows a female character who comes across a brook in the forest. She looks into the water, and up at the sky, and ponders about the person she used to love who broke her heart. However, she recognizes how much she’s grown and changed, and leaves feeling closure.”
The band say that they also modelled the single art after Arizona Iced Tea’s iconic look, honouring it’s place of prominence in vaporwave culture and tying it back on their own stylistic in-joke.
“Inside the letters is actually a high def picture of a watermelon dripped with honey, which was shot with Adrian Schaap, myself and Ryan during our photoshoot for the EP cover,” says Armstrong. “A watermelon has been part of our branding for the life of the band, but this will be the last time we will use a watermelon as we evolve as a band.”
“Arizona” is one of only two songs on the band’s upcoming five-song EP to feature lyrics. But, much like their previous single, “Riviera Paradise,” “Arizona” finds a strong groove mid-stream in with some precision percussion.
norc’s debut EP, with ginseng and honey is out at midnight, on August 23rd, 2019, immediately following their EP release show at The Seahorse Tavern. The night will also feature The Brood, No, It’s Fine, The Sleeping Machines, and a special psychedelic lighting show, complete with holographic colour phasing glasses that the band will be giving out.
There’s been no word on whether or not Arizona Iced Tea will be available at the show.
