Devarrow makes a return with an alt-folk song riddled with anxiety and a video to match. It’s the visual equivalent of ASMR, Spannungsbögen but without any of the enjoyment, a long, drawn out compilation of beautiful, but nerve-wracking moments. Fortunately, the video for “Heart Attack” comes with a much better soundtrack than your last break down.
“‘Heart Attack’ is deeply a personal song for me,” says Ereaux. “It stands as the first track on the new record, and is an intro to many of the themes which present themselves across the record. ”
With lines like “Heart attack in the middle of the night / Even though my heart’s all right” and visuals of impending doom – ranging from the inevitable popping of a balloon to the monolithic force of the ocean waiting to swallow us up one day – representative of the challenges, self-inflicted or otherwise, that we face in life. It’s the sort of thing to turn you prematurely gray; experiencing the infinite possibilities and cascading effects of our minute decisions and being trapped in the grips of analysis paralysis as the tides come crashing in.
“I often ponder about the space between the lines of who we want to be, and who we actually are, and how the distance between those two lines can grow and shrink during different times in our lives. ‘Heart Attack’ was written at a time when I felt I was living a life which didn’t feel like my own, and I was wondering how to get back to a place which felt truer to myself. ‘Heart Attack’ is that first plea – an ask to be taught how to live a life which reflected the way I felt about the world. While personal, my hope is that these questions can feel universal, and resonate with others.”
