As part of their series of summer releases, Honeymoon Driver (formerly known as Soapbox Opera), have just released their second of three singles: “My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad.” The Halifax-based trio just drove a nail through the coffin of your friendship with a fatal blow that can only be solved through an unlikely bout of fatherly fisticuffs.
As children when we got into fights with our friends, the best and final comeback always seemed to involve insulting each other’s parents. Having exhausted your energy and ammunition there would be nothing left to do but call upon a higher power. Which brings us to the only remaining nuclear option “My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad.”
It was a pretty safe bet that no would ever see that one come to its full conclusion. Everyone would just grab the rest of their GI Joes, sling their book bags over their shoulders, depart with some clumsy and disappointing parting shots, then call it week.
Honeymoon Driver’s song starts off slow but by the time you get into the one minute mark it gives us some toe tapping energy. Blake d’Entremont’s vocals are complemented nicely by his bandmates in areas of the song as they harmonize together. It’s that percussive guitar that really makes the song though.
“As cliché as it sounds, choosing one song that stands out is like choosing a favourite child; and in this case ‘My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad’ is our favourite child,” says d’Entremont of the second single. “Both the title and lyrics are referring to arguments about belief systems; how people don’t truly realize that their beliefs have been imposed on them since they are young and some get to the point where they can no longer tell their opinions aren’t their own and frustration that it causes.”
There’s still one more single to come from the band this month. Let’s just hope our friendship can recover before then.
