Slowcoaster are becoming increasingly enigmatic. After releasing their last album, Track One, as a series of stencilled paintings, and rumours that the next one might delivered on mediums ranging from soup cans to beer coasters, they’ve finally put out their first single in a year. This time, with the aptly named “Once in a Big Blue Moon.” It’s also available in a more traditional digital format.
The band say they wrote “Once in a Big Blue Moon” together in the middle of winter this year while stranded in a motel called The Port Motel in Canso, Nova Scotia.
WIth the fury of flurries around them, Slowcoaster channeled some much warmer vibes into “Once in a Big Blue Moon,” creating a palpable sense that we should be drinking piña coladas and getting caught in the rain. Blessed with a healthy amount of handclaps the song is practically summer on a pogostick.
“We were the only ones there,” says Slowcoaster’s Steven MacDougall. “We were playing at the local pub called AJ’s. I think they gave us a room out of pity during a storm. In all honesty, I could have lived there all winter writing and recording songs.”
While the single is being released as a standalone for the moment, MacDougall says that the band already have four more songs which they’ve recorded, though doesn’t mention what format they’ll be released in. It might just mark the end of an entire era.
“We may give up on the idea of albums and just constantly release singles,” says MacDougall.
