In the words of the Backstreet Boys, “Quit playing games with my heart.” Or your heart. Or anyone else’s heart for that matter. But the new single from Maura Whitman, “Roulette,” is a hard all-or-nothing bet that doubles down on love.
Young love is a tricky business. Jumping in with both feet into the deep end of a shallow pool of hormones is either a messy way to break something, or a fast track to disappointment. It’s generally not the sort of thing you want to go all in on, and yet most of us do.
Whitman goes for it hard, taking the risk and throwing herself to the mercy of starry-eyed romantic abandon.
“Being lost in love is like playing a game of roulette – while being young and captivated by someone, in hopes of them being the one – you’re willing to risk it all,” says Whitman. “You discover that putting your heart on the line does not guarantee a positive outcome, much like a game of roulette. At the same time, you find yourself caught up in the thrill of risk-taking for love.”
But broken hearts build character, and ultimately only make us all the more relatable, right? It’s better to have love and lost and all that jazz. Who can say they’ve really lived if they haven’t recklessly thrown their heart into something while leaving their head at home.
Written by Maura Whitman along with songwriting siblings Dylan and Jodi Guthro, and award-winning producer Corey LeRue, “Roulette” rides in on a carpet of felt and gets bolstered by a truss of synth beats. It pits the edge of Whitman’s voice against a blunted guitar, for a relationship that sounds entirely one-sided.
