Catherine MacLellan returns with a pair of singles from her upcoming album, Coyote. “Roll With The Wind” and “Emmet’s Song” are two guitar-driven songs about the men in her life, but come from very different places.
“‘Roll With the Wind’ was written for a few friends in my life – men who would come to visit me at my country home and somehow disturb the quiet peace of my life here. They’d waltz in, mess around with girls or start fights, and eventually (after drinking all my booze) head back home to the city,” explains MacLellan, “And yet, I always welcomed them back.”
On the other end is “Emmet’s Song,” a song directed towards more youthful woes. Perhaps the two songs together suggest that it’s the time you put in at the beginning that we see reflected later on.
“I wrote ‘Emmet’s Song’ for my nephew. He was going through such a tough point of his life – so much change and feeling outcast from society and his family. He asked to stay with me for a while, and I took him in. The two of us learned so much during that time. I was so inspired by his bravery, walking through life with his head up and heart open despite the hardships he was going through.
“Maybe we don’t have the same story, but we share the same emotions and many of the same experiences. Being able to share my songs and stories with people, finding that connection point… That’s what it’s all about for me.”
Catherine MacLellan’s seventh full-length record, Coyote will be released on October 11 via True North Records. You can also catch her at the PEI Brewing Company nearly every Tuesday & Wednesday in July, August and September as part of “Heaven To Me – Songs & Stories of Prince Edward Island” series, which also Meaghan Blanchard, and Gordie MacKeeman.
