We caught up with Halifax’s Kids Losing Sleep to find out what they’ve been doing with their free time. Turns out they’ve been up partying all night, at least according to their latest single, “Put it On.” Working with producer and Nova Scotian’s resident hitmaker John Mullane (In-Flight Safety), the band’s newest track is a poppy examination of the pressures to ABP (Always Be Party). Just because you’re expected to always need to be having a good time, it doesn’t mean you’re always going to like it.
“Simply put its basically about having a love/hate relationship with partying and being in groups of people,” says Kids Losing Sleep’s guitar and vocalist Owen Williams.
“I’ve always felt this weird struggle of like wanting to be out being social, but then when I find myself in that situation I just want to leave. It’s also a bit speculative on how someone can use that kind of lifestyle as an escape/distraction or a means of numbing yourself, which I think is something a lot of people can relate to more than they might even realize.”
The track beats in with a chorus that might have been my own teenage mantra. The real party was always the long walk home from the party anyway.
“You’ve had a bit too much, but it’s never enough.
Ca we go now? This party’s a let down.”
Williams says they’ve been continuing their work with John Mullane to hone their sound, presumably towards the production of a soon-to-be-released EP. Mullane has been working with several bands in the Halifax-region, using his experience as a JUNO-nominee to produce some of the best pop bands in the region.
“John is our rock ‘n’ roll dad. He really helps us pull out the sounds we’re looking for. The last couple releases wouldn’t be what they are without him and (Montreal-based Mastering Engineer) Paul Edwards.”
Kids Losing Sleep have a quiet summer ahead of them, though hint that they have a few things planned for the Fall, which they can’t talk about just yet. There’s also rumours that their inevitable EP will be coming this fall, so keep your ears peeled for that.
