Corner Brook, Newfoundland’s folk duo Bridget & Dahlia have followed up with an impressive second single to last month’s “Hide.” Having already blown us away with those stellar harmonies and raw folk aesthetics, “What I’ve Become” shows us that the duo are more than a one-trick pony.
The track opens playfully, but immediately launches into some heavy wisdom. It’s suitable, given the rapid delivery method lessons tend to be delivered from the school of hard knocks. The song provides almost provides a bookend counterpart to the Nine Inch Nails hit “Hurt.”
“Waiting for a moment, though it may not ever come,
Maybe I’ve been waiting for too long”
”What I’ve become is about learning from past mistakes to be able to grow and become the person you are,” says Bridget Swift, songwriter and exactly one half of Bridget & Dahlia. “It’s about realizing that waiting for the future to happen gets you nowhere, and deciding to finally change whatever is holding you back.”
‘What I’ve Become’ also leans into the xylophones and closes out with a horn section, making for a quick shift from the bare bones folk harmonies of their first single, and checks a lot of our boxes.
The track is the second single to be released from Bridget & Dahlia’s upcoming Runaways album. The duo have been working on the album with producer and artist Steve Maloney after seeing them at the Music NL conference in St. John’s, NL in 2017, and have been working on the project since early 2018.
Runaways, the duo’s debut album, is now set to be released on August 1st, 2019.
