Would you believe me if I said there was more to Newfoundland than just shots of screech and kissing the cod? Well, then you haven’t heard of Hullo. Twenty-years-young Hullo, aka Nick Bendzsa, has just released his debut synth pop EP I’ll Do Me.
“I’ll Do Me references indecision in my life, in which I’m often looking to figure things out and be true to my feelings, but never seem to be able to feel content with them,” explains Bendzsa. “The positive connotation associated with the name is also meant to contrast and play off of the melancholy album artwork.”
With these four tracks Hullo aims to take us on a journey through his emotions beginning with “Ripple.” Slowing gaining momentum, the slow moving track is lined with lo-fi synths, all in preparation for Bendzsa’s moody vocals. The lyrics touch on that frightening moment when you finally move out on your own to fend for yourself.
“’Ripple’ is about moving away for the first time, and all the excitement and fear associated with that, while trying to balance the changing dynamics of my relationship,” says Bendzsa.
“Cold in the Sky” starts off with a light jazz -like feel and is undoubtedly the peppiest song on the EP. Although Bendzsa describes his music as an expression of sarcasm and anxiety he sets a lighthearted tone to each track.
“’Cold in the Sky’ is a song about wanting to open up to others, and wanting others to open up to you, says Bendzsa. “I write a lot about the ups-and-downs of my relationship, and about feeling lonely. I also get a lot of inspiration each time I reconfigure my set up, and have time to sit down for a few hours and try out new things.”
Hullo takes his honesty and spreads it out throughout the last two tracks “So Sad” and “Landlines.” The downtempo beats create an almost meditative vibe which makes this a great EP to play through your bluetooth speaker while lounging on the beach this summer.
