History does have a tendency to repeat itself, and so, unsurprisingly, 53 years later we’re hearing echoes of Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang” reverberating in the new single from Daughter of the Moon, “Casanova.” Cher did it first, Nancy Sinatra gave it that tremolo guitar twist, and now Natalie Ramsay has given it all a good shake up and used the pieces to rebuild it to suit her purposes. The lyrical matter of an unfaithful lover matter is a perennial one.
Natalie Ramsay, who plays guitar on the track herself, takes the role of a mistreated lover who refuses to play the role any longer, perhaps coming to the conclusion that being tied down wasn’t what she wanted in any case.
“Well I’d rather be a wild weed
Than a flower in a vase”
History might be repeating itself, but perspective sure counts for an awful lot.
If history has taught us anything else, it’s that “Casanova” might find itself a place in the next Tarantino soundtrack.
Sweetness in the Shadows, the new 6-song EP from Daughter of the Moon, is due out on August 1, 2019 via Citadel House Records.
