From his album Self Sabotage, Prince Edward Island hip-hop artist Vince The Messenger has released a new video for his track “Blacked Out.” The first of Vince’s official releases, the song hones in on the message behind the album: not throwing your passion aside which, as Vince puts it, is the very definition of self sabotage.
“’Blacked Out’ is the final song of my album, Self Sabotage, and serves to drive home recurring themes appearing throughout the album,” explains Vince.
“In particular, ‘Blacked Out’ details a strong desire to be triumphant in the face of adversity or oppressing forces. The term ‘blackout’ itself can have several different meanings: it might refer to loss of power, loss of consciousness, memory, or to blackout someone or something in an attempt to disregard it or them. Each of these meanings can be applied to the song to some degree through metaphor.”
“Blacked Out” was directed by Daniel Butterfield, aka Vince The Messenger himself, and filmed by Brianna Squires. Shot in all black and white the video itself is simple, with it mainly focused on Vince. The minimalist nature of the video serves to further emphasize the lyrics.
“Blacked Out was filmed in a location that appears to be desolate and discomforting,” says Vince, “This location was chosen to reinforce the narrative of not only existing but triumphing in an environment which promotes failure. The lack of colour in the video helps to emphasize this. The lyrics appear on screen simply to showcase their importance throughout the song and help to keep viewers immersed.”
“This is the second and final music video from my album. It’s release after over a year of the release of Self Sabotage serves as a curtain call on the album and the end of the Self Sabotage creative period. You can expect to see more music videos from me in the future,” says Vince.
Vince The Message is not currently on tour but you can catch him at Baba’s lounge June 22, alongside Slime Da Garbage Mane and Marquis & The Squid.
