Kim Harris packs a punch. Drawing comparisons to the “gentleness of Aldous Harding, the emotional heft of Sharon Van Etten, and the sheer grandiosity of Florence + The Machine,” Harris is a powerhouse whose vocals are the things scientists find escaping from black holes. She’s following up her 2015’s critically-acclaimed LP (not to mention voted in as having one of the 25 Best Album Covers of the East Coast), Only The Mighty. Her new single, “Heirloom” leans heavy into the arena of alternative pop, but with a pillar of strength at its core.
As Harris explains it, “Heirloom” is her own story of the phoenix rising from the ashes. It is the momentum that keeps u pushing forward. Building on a slow burn, the song features guitar and piano playing off one another, before launching into Harris’s powerful chorus. As an Easter egg, Stewart Legere and Margot Durling can be heard performing background vocals on the song’s studio version.
“The song is an acceptance of the idea that after massive upheavals, some of us have no choice but find a way to continue to live in the destruction, mining ourselves for energy we have carried over lifetimes to keep us alive and moving forward,” says Harris.
“Fireweed flourishes in this destruction. Its growth requires a state of recovery. There is no better flower for me to wear on my corsage rolling up to life.”
“Heirloom” is just the first teaser track for a work nearly five years in the making. It will appear on her forthcoming album, which will be released in early 2020 on LHM Records.
Harris is just coming off of series of Spring tour dates with Jenn Grant and Don Brownrigg and about to hit the road with Leanna Hoffman for an Eastern Canadian tour.
