A year and a half following the release of her latest album, The Details, Nova Scotia’s Mo Kenney has dropped a new standalone single, “Ahead of Myself.” Upbeat yet packed with realness, the track serves up reckless abandon in a polished presentation.
Keeping with Kenney’s signature morosely-introspective-while-wrapped-in-a-pop-shell sound, the track is carried by a steady beat. It’s easy to get lost in that while the lyrics describe that special type of self-indulgence that leads to more trouble than good.
“‘Ahead of Myself’ is a little snapshot in time,” says Kenney. “I had recently moved to Downtown Dartmouth and I was running around town sporting a black eye and a Hawaiian shirt. It was the first time I had ever had a place to myself — no roommates — so I went a little wild there for a bit. Reckless, but fun.”
Lyrics like “meet me a the ferry and take me home, but I’ll never remember if you ever showed” and “let’s take a walk and find my street, the sun is rising while we speak” describe the sentiment behind the music. The track paints a picture of how it feels to be dancing with a series of wild nights and rash decision making. While at the time this lifestyle may seem reasonable and fun, looking back on it can be regrettable, but at least it’s nice to have the freedom to make those bad decisions.
The track is polished and keeps with the catchy quality we have come to expect from Mo Kenney. Deep electronic bass notes that pop in and out of the music’s background seem to even be giving a slight nod to the EDM sounds of city nightlife, and the beat never quits.
Though this track is only standalone, we are hoping it means Kenney has something else in store.
