Fredericton-born indie-rock band LAPS have dropped a brand new single, “Brunch.” The band moved to Montreal two years ago, but we’re partial to giving them a way to write home to their roots here in the Maritimes, especially with a single like “Brunch.”
“Brunch’ is an ode to asking more of those around you, skirting the obvious questions and not being afraid to challenge your friends,” says LAPS’ Heather Ogilvie. “We like to debate, which is different than arguing; you can learn a lot by stirring the pot.”
The band never stays on one idea for too long, constantly mixing up time signatures and notations, with each melody boasting its own bouncy personality. Nevertheless, the band never strays too far from the light-hearted aura that “Brunch” provides.
“We want to challenge listeners a little,” adds Tate LeJeune. “‘Brunch’ has an ‘underwater section’, and generally a positive-type vibe, so relatively easy to translate.”
“Contentedness can hinder growth, for sure.”
Merging light-hearted strings and drums with intertwining melodies that interlude one another, there’s no shortage of diversity in LAPS’s latest. It feels like a tour around the breakfast table; jumping from one portion to the next, resulting in a myriad of hearty tunes circling the flapjack that is LAPS.
“It was written with the intention of creating something light,” says Ogilvie. “The feel of a lot of our songs is more section-by-section & based on pop culture, a historical or contextual reference, or just an adjective.”
“We like to write in a way that gives the audience reward for sticking through some odd-time signatures and non-obvious changes.”
The band will be doing a cross-country tour this summer, stopping by in the Maritimes in late summer/early fall.
