Electronica duo “Bleum” have doubled down on their dark evolution with their latest single “Poison”. Fans of this rising pair will be familiar with 2018 festival season favourites “Lose You” “Everything”, “Visit” and the first presentation of their evolved sound “Move With Me”.
“‘Poison’ is about drinking to help a difficult conversation go smoother,” says vocalist Brittany McQuinn, “and in this story it doesn’t go well.” The verse builds emotional tension that can only be relieved by having a bit of a groove tantrum when the chorus hits.
“Poison” brings the dark ‘n’ danceable, with an emotional vocal performance, gritty bass line and a seductive beat that might make you accidentally drive too fast. “I love dark sounds and a little grit so I’m always trying to push the boundaries on how much of that I can fit into what is ostensibly pop music,“ says producer Daniel James.
Remember that feeling when you stopped being a snob and realised what a banger Britney Spears’ “Toxic” is? Relive that enlightenment when you take a bite out of this bass line and get the shivers when the chorus synths dance across your tongue.
Bleum is just one of the duo’s successful projects, and their experience shows. James’ polished production and McQuinn’s emotional vocals display world class pop sensibility. “This song has got a lot of spunk and attitude, so I had fun recording the vocals.” Fans will hear Brittany’s trademark sultry whisper, and will be drawn into her storytelling with new drama and strength she brings to the track.
You can feel a bit snobby again knowing that you’ve discovered an artist before they blew up. Bleum will bring the dance party everywhere they go this festival season. Look for them at Paddlefest, Area 506, and wherever you get your tune fix.
