Music Video: Little Cities Remind us ‘Safety First’ – Sign with Word Is Bond Inc.

Prince Edward Island’s pop punk prodigies Little Cities have released yet another music video off of their Friends Floors EP. The song “Safety First” also features island rapper Vince The Messenger making an appearance in both the track and the video.

Starting off with an emotional monologue from Alycia Tierney, it seems as though we found ourselves walking in on the downfall of a relationship. Director Ryan McCarvill of Retrospective presents the video in black and white, giving us a sense that the colourless world represents the happiness that has been drained away from main character Vince, who is clearly on the losing end of the relationship.

“We decided early on that we wanted to tell a story with this video,” says Little Cities’ guitarist and vocalist Mathew Hannah.

The song is about a relationship where one person is looking for something more serious and lasting, where the other person is seeing someone else on the side. The main character has a suspicion that his partner is being unfaithful and that the relationship is on its way out, which is described in the first verse lyric: “wake me up when you get home, while I wait here patient by my phone just to hear you say we are through.”

“It becomes apparent throughout the video that the couple are not on the same page, and that the character played by Alycia is being unfaithful and dishonest,” explains Hannah. “Ultimately she does not have the decency or maturity to deal with the elephant in the room. The chorus lyric ‘I hope that this year you grow up just a little bit, stop living life through my playlist’ plays into that theme of being young, or not serious enough to commit to one person.”

The song itself is catchy and upbeat although the lyrics paint a more sobre picture which is perfectly played out through the music video. I mean are you truely a pop punk band if you don’t sing about heartbreak at one time or another.

Either way, good word must travel fast across the Confederation Bridge as Little Cities have now been picked up by New York based record label Word Is Bond Inc.

“Signing with Word Is Bond definitely reaffirms all of our hard work over the past two years,” says Hannah. “Since the beginning we had every intention of taking the band as far as we possibly could. We came to realize that there were great opportunities awaiting us that were not quite available if we stayed land locked on PEI.”
