Coming at us with the least Partner-like sound yet is the duo’s new single, “Les ailes d’un ange.” Being from Sackville, New Brunswick, Partner are tapping into the French roots of their hometown and showing us a side of them we had never expected to see.
Starting off with a soft piano melody, the track builds into a piano-rock power ballad about courage and facing your fears. The music, while powerful, is inspirational and soft, and far from the Ween-like, grungy rock ‘n’ roll sounds we are used to hearing from Partner. “Les ailes d’un ange” also takes a much more serious tone than that of the band’s previous two single releases, “Long & McQuade” and “Tell You Off.”
The song was inspired by a poem written by a man named Cedric Sims and combines the piano of Elton John and the lyrics of Bernie Taupin with the intensity and language of Céline Dion. It would blend in nearly perfectly in Dion’s track roster.
The lyrics depict the act of using wings borrowed from an angel to help face your fears in hell.
“The song explores how, by having the courage to face your fears head on, you find you possess a strength you never knew,” says Partner. “In order to craft this song, we had to face our greatest fears as artists. So form imitates content. Facing our fears is never easy, but there is life on the other side of fear. It’s so important to remind ourselves of this. We hope our listeners can be reminded of this fundamental truth and enjoy the ride!”
And face their fears they did, since this latest track strays quite far from what fans would have expected to hear. It’s so different, in fact, that it makes us wonder what the duo are really up to.
With the band’s new album, Saturday the 14th, dropping April 5, it’s safe to say there is no guessing what the remainder of the album will sound like, but we hope it’s worth all of these guessing games.
