Canada’s East Coast is about to take centre stage, or at least an impressive chunk of it, at the Folk Alliance International Conference, the largest folk music industry event in the world. With more than 10% of the event’s 150 performers representing Atlantic Canada, we get to celebrate our folksy ways on an international level. Have a listen to all of our east coasters showcasing at this year’s FAI in Montreal.
“This just might be the mightiest year for New Brunswick at Folk Alliance International,” says Jean Surette, Music/Musique NB’s Executive Director.
“Typically we have one or two artists in the official showcases and, because the event is usually in the U.S., other artists or agents won’t make the trip down since it’s quite expensive. Last year it was in Kansas City and next year it’s in New Orleans. However, every five years, the event comes to Canada!
“This year in Montréal, other than the two official [showcases] that [New Brunswick] have (The Lumber Jills and Mike Biggar), we also have a whole crop of New Brunswick artists and pros who are going up for the conference to participate in the legendary Late Night Private Showcases that take place on three floors of the host hotel. Each room is transformed into small private venue hosted by labels, agencies or regional organizations. The four atlantic music industry associations and the East Coast Music Association have always had a suite with stellar lineups. The east coast has a very good reputation at FAI. Our room is always full.”
The full list of East Coast artists making the trip to Folk Alliance International this year includes Rachel Beck, Ben Miller & Anita MacDonald, Rube & Rake, Jacques Surette, Leanne Hoffman, The Lumber Jills, David Myles, Catherine Maclellan, Gabrielle Papillon, Erin Costelo, Pretty Archie, Brent Mason, Matt Andersen, Matt Mays, The Dardanelles, Mo Kenney, Jenn Grant, Dave Gunning, Lennie Gallant, Mike Biggar, Ryan Cook, Kellie Loder, Vishtèn, Meaghan Blanchard, The Bombadils, The East Pointers, Earle & Coffin, Jimmy Rankin, Matthew Byrne and Thomas Stajcer.
And if you look carefully, Terra Spencer, who is currently on tour with Ryan Cook, will be sneaking in a highly recommended First Timers showcase. So keep an eye out for that!
