Single: Willow St. Station’s ‘Across the World’ is a Heartbroken Duet

When George Harrison penned “Something,” his love song for his then-wife Pattie Boyd, he didn’t have to endure her being all the way “Across the Universe.” It sounds like the folks of Willow St. Station having taken that idea one step further, and a few more steps this side of melancholy, as they sing about someone with that special something who got away on “Across the World.”

Willow St. Station‘s Ryan Willigar and Sam Reid say that “Across the World” was written by them pair of them a little over a year ago, it just took the band this long to get it recorded and released.

“Essentially, I think the song is about losing someone close to you and having that person ultimately end up halfway around the world; and not being able to do anything about it, all the while reminiscing about the things and times they had together,” explains Willigar.

Performed as a duet between Willigar and Reid, the song nearly mirrors the romantic ponderings of Harrison’s “Something,” but quickly dissolves into a lament, as we discover the song’s love interest has clearly moved on and moved away.

“[The song has] sort of a classic theme of reminiscing about what the heart misses most about love and loss of love. The arrangement of it just kind of came together jamming, I think it was originally written for acoustic guitar and vocals and we had to adjust things to make it fit for the band. The single itself was recorded with Jason Jenkyns at Codapop,” says Will Hansen.

“It was a nice chance for us to develop something with a lot of different vocal parts since everyone in the band sings.”

At the moment, the band say that they are sticking close to Halifax,  with plans to dedicate more time to writing and recording, but with this single recorded, and more on the way, they hint that we might expect more shows next season.
