Among the many things noted in the East Coast Music Association’s report Striking A New A-Chord: Recommendations for the Growth and Development of Canada’s East Coast Music Industry is the region’s dire need for industry infrastructure. That includes a alarming lack of music publishing companies, agents, publicists, managers, and more. One of New Brunswick’s music scene regulars stepped in to help that gap. A year ago Kate Butler launched Fredericton-based label and artist management company, She Said Feck!
Since launching, the label has officially signed Fredericton bands Tortoise the Hare & the Millionaire and CHIPS and Moncton’s Melonvine. The label also released Tortoise the Hare & the Millionaire’s self-titled EP which has remained in CHSR’s Top Ten since October, and a video for CHIPS track “Modern Days.”
“It’s been an incredible year and I am so proud of what I have accomplished and how far all three artists have come,” says owner Kate Butler. “With any business, the first year hasn’t come without it’s set of hurdles and challenges which inevitably become learning points.”
Butler has also been busy working in support of several other New Brunswick-based artists, venues, and festivals in many capacities. It’s a rarity to find her absent from any event.
“I am very lucky to have a positive rapport with so many talented NB based artists, festivals and venues and am always more than happy to help them,” said Butler, “whether that’s with booking, a release project, or just being a support to them when they are cutting their teeth on local stages.”
Butler says that she is currently looking at adding more artists to the She Said Fair roster, but continues to keep busy with the current lineup. CHIPS are preparing to tour have been working with producer Colin Buchanan of Paper Lions to produce a new EP, while Melonvine’s track “Codependent” has landed a spot on Spotify’s Official Ready to Rock playlist, the band are also planning a tour and some studio time.
“My main focus will always be local NB musicians as it’s important for them to have support, not only from their provincial music association but someone on the front lines to guide them in their formative years,” said Butler.
To celebrate their first trip around the sun She Said Feck will be hosting a pair of shows celebrating local musicians, with the labels band’s at the forefront.
