Music Video: Dali Van Gogh go full Blair Witch with ‘Get Away’

Nova Scotia hard rockers Dali Van Gogh have released a music video for their single “Get Away,” off of their upcoming album Under Her Spell. The Halifax band could not have picked a better album to go with their video, channeling Blair Witch Project/Paranormal Activity vibes in their filming style.

Heavy guitars greet us at the track’s beginning, followed shortly by frontman John Scotto’s lo-fi lyrics that provide us with imagery of a heist. As the track goes on, Scotto’s lyrics take on a more natural sound before dipping back into lo-fi again. The verses continue to swap styles throughout.

The band’s energy is fully realized in the chorus, with voice and string alike cranking themselves up to full volume, allowing for maximum headbang potential.

“I grew up watching a lot of movies, and I was always a big fan of big chase scenes in films like Ronin with Robert De Niro, The Transporter, Gone in 60 seconds, and a number of the bond films,” Scotto says. “This song was kind of my way of writing a story and the melody that would go along with it. Kind of my own little love letter to a good chase I guess.”

Despite being a little hard on the eyes, the music video cheekily synergizes with the music video. Opting for a dizzying film in the middle of the woods, we catch quick glances of the band members hiding amongst the trees before director Ethan Anderson immediately dashes off in the other direction. Indeed, if something were to find you in the woods, chances are you should get away.

“We shot it deep in the woods out in Enfield,” Scotto says of the video. “I believe it was Isaac’s idea.”

“Some of our fans keep asking us to put more content online so we figured we should get something out there for them.”

The single also marks the debut of keyboarder/vocalist Rachelle Moreau and drummer Johnny Moore.

“Rachelle brings a whole new dimension to [Dali Van Gogh],” says Kent, the band’s guitarist, “not just in her vocal and keyboard abilities but in her attitude. She’s worked incredibly hard getting up to speed on the new songs, and has brought new life in to some pieces of music that we’ve already been jamming, privately or on stage, for years! She’s a vocal powerhouse that compliments [John] Scotto perfectly. We’re all very excited to get her out on stage with us in March.”

“I grew up on Queen, Styx, and all the power rock acts of the 1980s, but I haven’t had a chance to utilize my voice that way in years,” Moreau says. “Getting to push myself again and really sing has already been incredible, and we haven’t even hit the stage yet!”

“My name is Johnny Moore,” Moore offers, “and this is my favourite band on the citadel.”

Under Her Spell drops on March 29th, 2019.
