Andre Pettipas & The Giants are just on the edge of recording their sophomore album. But before they get around to laying down some fresh tracks, they’ve polished us one of their old chestnuts and announced a string of dates. Here’s “Break,” featuring Natalie Lynn.
Originally a tune that Pettipas had put together in 2013 with his previous band, The Odd Bit, “Break” draws its inspirations from time-tested (and more recent) classic breakup bangers like Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks’, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.”
Written when Pettipas and Lynn first met, Pettipas describes “Break” as “Young love and frustration packaged in a rough, rugged , rock ‘n’ roll number. […] I always liked the tune because it was a bit different than anything I’ve done before.”
This is, in fact, the third time the song has been recorded, this time with the aid of Jason Jenkyns (Coda Pop Studio) and Jon Landry (The Stanfields). After a few final tweaks and trims, Pettipas says he’s confident they got it right this time around.
“We sped the tune up a few bpm and trimmed a bit of fat to make every part mean something rather than just be there or fill space,” says Pettipas.
“I knew I wanted it to be a duet when I wrote it because of its breakup theme. Classic adolescent love type thing. After meeting Natalie and hearing her chops I let her know about the track and she didn’t hesitate and wrote the perfect verse for the track.
We’ve been performing the song together for years and are super excited to get it out there and find some new listeners.”
Six years and three recordings after initially writing the song, Pettipas says that “Break” has finally found the right edge and the band are in a good place for it.
“I feel more focused and polished as a musician but will never lose the bare bones rock and roll edge. You can tell when a song has true emotion and I think we were finally able to capture that feeling with this release of the track.”
Andre Pettipas & The Giants will be touring the Maritimes over the next couple months before heading into the studio with producer Brian Moncarz (Moneen, Our Lady Peace, The Trews, The Tea Party) for their sophomore album.
