Single: Don Brownrigg Flips the Script on Break Ups with ‘Bad Timing’

Just a month and a half after the release of his single “Room for Me,” Halifax-based but Newfoundland-born artist Don Brownrigg has released “Bad Timing.” Picking up the pace, his new track flips the script of of the last, bringing Brownrigg‘s overarching theme of heartbreak full circle.

Where “Room for Me” came from a place of pain after being on the receiving end of a bad breakup, “Bad Timing” is Brownrigg working through variations on a theme. The song comes at us from the opposite angle as Brownrigg sings of the trouble that is breaking up with someone who does not want to let go.

“[This track is] kind of the opposite of the last one,” says Brownrigg. “This time I’m the one pushing the other away. It’s an empathetic push, though. I know what it’s like to be shut out.”

Further contrasting his previous track, “Bad Timing” also picks up the pace. While “Room for Me” is a slow and gut-wrenching lullaby, his latest is a power-inciting dance built on honesty and empathy.

Built on a strong bass line and a tambourine beat, the single is nothing short of catchy. It gives listeners a melody to get lost in while the lyrics recite to them descriptions of a hard and familiar feeling.

The words “I know you want me to do all the things for you, […] do all the things that I can do” repeatedly run through listeners’ ears. While simple, these lyrics are far from meaningless; they allow Brownrigg‘s fans to apply their own experiences to the sentiment.

“All these songs are pretty much either about initiating a breakup or being broken up with.”

“Bad Timing” also serves as the first radio single for his upcoming album, Fireworks, which will be full of tracks circling the same general concept.
