Halifax’s jazz trio The Blue Lane apparently have a few surprises up their sleeves, and we mean more than just releasing a fresh new single on Christmas Eve. The band have released “Penny Jenson” into the wild, and rather than the bluesy number we probably would have expected (or anything relatively festive, given the context), the song is a wild mash-up of genres and a whole lot of fun.
“The Blue Lane is wishing everyone a happy holiday season. To help add even more spice to the festivities we are releasing our single ‘Penny Jenson!’ The Blue Lane classic is a raw and electric experience. With heavy grooves and thick driving riffs, you can see that this full out jam will bring you from your seat to your feet,” says The Blue Lane’s Rachael Henderson.
By which they mean they’re breaking out a song from their live set and bestowing upon us a gift of Christmas exuberance. Like Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Stone” meets a rapid fire burst of lyrics delivered a la Pete Shelley.
“Mrs.
Penny Jenson
She loves attention
She’s oh so tempting
Penny Jenson”
“Penny Jenson” is just short a few oi oi oi’s, or perhaps some sleigh bells, depending on your mood tonight.
“Penny Jenson is that Hendrix-inspired psychedelic rock song The Blue Lane would play live at the end of our shows if the venue and audience is appropriate!” says Morgan Alexander Cruickshank,The Blue Lane’s guitarist.
“Every time we play it live something different happens. I remember one show at The Carleton, I plugged in two guitars to my amp and then started playing both at the same time, it looked twisted, then the strap went off, all of a sudden our friends were holding up one my guitars from the edge of stage so I could play it, at the same time they were all singing the chorus. The song has brought some really magical moments into my life.”
