Single: Cassette Tapes take on a Garage Rock Pop Song with ‘Toronto’

Saint John four-piece Cassette Tapes take a stab at writing a pop song for their second single, “Toronto.” It’s a little bit hook up culture, a little bit optimism, and every bit garage rock.

“Toronto” is a lo-fi headlong rush, driven hard by the Cassette Tapes’ rhythm section, only to have the show stolen by an explosive guitar solo.

The band explain that the song’s narrative follows the protagonist to Toronto for a visit, and in the midst of a crazy night meets a girl at a party. Hormones all ablaze, they’ve convinced themselves that this is their ride-or-die, till-death-do-they-part, absolute soul mate. But also, they can’t even remember their name.

“Kinda came from the idea of people hooking up at parties and thinking that they’ve met ‘the one’ even though they never see them again or even remember their name,” says Cassette Tapes frontman Yurgos Elisseou, who denies that the story isn’t necessarily recounting from a personal experience, but also admits it might be a universal one.

“I’m sure most people have been through something very similar.”

“Toronto seems like one of those places that are kinda dream like, similar to like the idea people have of New York or other larger cities. The kind of place that you’d imagine things like that happening,” says Elisseou.

Elisseou says that the track is very likely to appear on their upcoming album, which would be appearing sometime early in 2019.

“Kind of hard to say, most of the tracks are pretty close to being finished however two of the song files got corrupted so we have to redo them.  We’re doing everything ourselves so it can be hard to get things finished.”

After playing a couple shows a month at Saint John’s Taco Pica, the band say they’re taking a break to focus on finishing the album. They’re working hard on fresh material, which they hope to have ready for their next Taco Pica appearance on January 6th, 2019.
