Christine Campbell has released an inspiring new video for her song ‘Butterfly’ more than a year after its initial release on the album, ‘Roller Coaster.’ The track, produced by Canadian rapper Classified, is an anthem for all who have overcome the hardships of bullying and mistreatment.
The lyrics use the imagery of being trapped in a cocoon to the suffocating, trapped feeling of being bullied. Likewise, Campbell compares breaking out of this cocoon to moving on to greater things and realizing your own greatness. It’s an uplifting reminder to love yourself, even when someone is trying to push you down.
Campbell has certainly come a long way from days of being bullied. Coming from a small town in Prince Edward Island, she’s paving her way into Canada’s collection of powerful female rockers. There is a raw edge to her voice, and her instrumental talents are a force to be reckoned with.
The song ‘Butterfly’ has a classic rock vibe to it, reminiscent of ’90s icons Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow. The verses are slow and reflective, but Campbell’s voice builds to a battle cry by the time the chorus rolls around.
The video is simple, but the simplicity really serves to enhance the message Campbell is trying to send. We jump between two settings. The first is Campbell and her band performing in a smoky, whimsical room, with contortionists hanging from rings and ribbons. The second is a more literal visual depiction of the song’s lyrics – a woman dressed as a moth with a black and white filter, swinging through the air from a pole and stripping layers away until the end, when her wings are finally able to burst free.
The belated release of this video has breathed new life into an already stellar song, and shines a spotlight on a well-deserving anthem of empowerment and self-love.
