Halifax’s Quiet Parade have returned with “Thunder,” their first new song to be released in nearly three years. Rather than an AC/DC bone-shattering storm of an anthem, Quiet Parade (as their name might suggest) gently lull you in like sound of rain and the soft roll of thunder in the distance with this questing tune.
“I say ‘brand new’ because the French record we put out in February was really just translations of old songs,” explains Trevor Murphy, the band’s bassist, referring to Nous Étions Icitte, their Quiet Parade’s French-language debut.
While the track might have a calming effect on the rest of us, the lyrics seem like they’re ready to eat the band up inside. It’s full of the sorts of things that get asked in the lonely dark hours of the night.
“The song is kind of about searching for answers to questions left unasked. Searching is a big theme in Quiet Parade lyrics,” says Murphy.
Originally part of a pack of demos recorded at New Scotland Yard this Fall, the single emerged into the world one in a quintuplets – the strongest one of the lot.
“We’ve been writing a lot of new songs as a four piece (with me on bass), so we’ve been a bit more focused on the new-new. We felt like this one was the most ‘done’, so we buckled down and finished it up over in Dartmouth.
We won’t leave those others on the cutting room floor, we’ll rework them and keep plugging away at them until they feel ready. Still more work to do.”
While we have those other four demos to look forward to, the band say even more music is on the way. Quiet Parade will be heading over to Prince Edward Island in November where they’ll be recording an entirely new song with Colin Buchanan of Sorrey/Paper Lions.
In the meantime, you can catch Quiet Parade performing live at both Nova Scotia Music Week and Halifax Pop Explosion.
