Formed in 2012, Which Witch Is Which is a Moncton based punk band. Keeping in line with influences including The Ramones, and Motorhead the band plays a fast paced, fuzzy, and straight forward brand of punk. After releasing their self-titled record in July of this year the band has been picking up steam quickly, playing in the maritime festival circuit including Mud City Meltdown and No Funswick.
The record wastes no time throwing you right into it’s sound with the opening track “Shot Down” beginning with a quick punk beat and a fuzzy guitar that sounds like The Black Keys got really into Motorhead. The song delivers a dose of high energy punk that would undoubtedly garner very strange looks for anybody caught not dancing along at a show.
“Silverball Mania” is a punchy, anthemic track that builds to a mountainous chorus with a strong, fast backbeat, loud exciting guitars, and shrieking vocals. The urgency of this song feels like you are watching them perform in the middle of a tornado.
“Your Fault” stands out to me as one of the better tracks on the record with the raspy vocals perfectly suited to the chorus’s screaming repetition of the title. The aggression on the vocals seems to come through here more than in other tracks.
“Intervention” brings some gang vocals into the mix in the chorus, and does a good job of adding a dynamic that is not seen on most of the other tracks. The song keeps it pretty straight forward while keeping the energy high in a Ramones-like sing-along.
Which Witch Is Which has carved out there space in the maritime punk scene. With songs that sound like they are creating a soundtrack to their own action movie, and a unique mix of styles not as common in the region I can see the band doing well for themselves. If you’re in the market for some high energy punk and are a fan of guitar solos look out for these guys.
