Prince Edward Island duo Get Well Pharmacy have dropped their debut album Story of a House Fire. The folk music newcomers bring a lot of heart with their maiden voyage into the music scene, using a plethora of imagery and deep, raspy, John Mayer-esque vocals to display a theme of love from the past.
The titular track, “Story of a House Fire”, reminisces on this right from the get-go, using a melancholy guitar deep drums to tell us a story about a relationship gone south, symbolized by the smoke and fire imagery.
“Where Am I Going And How Do I Get There” continues to build on the theme, contemplating the relationship and where such a road goes; a relatable topic for many. Each instrument, even the rock n’ roll mainstay electric guitar, greets listeners gently.
“Saved You A Seat” will catch the attention of the melodically-inclined, with its twangy strings taking on a pattern similar to Daft Punk’s “Instant Crush.” “Silver Bullet,” meanwhile, signifies the end of the relationship that we’ve been told about thus far, which pairs nicely with the bouncier nature of the track.
Brett Gallant, one half of the duo, says the album has enormous meaning to him and his musical partner, Zak Doucette.
“It feels like a huge stepping stone for us. Zak and I have been best friends since we were kids and making music together has always been a goal. To finally have something we can call our own feels very surreal.”
“We really hope listeners enjoy the record and find something in it that they can relate to,” Doucette chimed in.
At just 19 and 20 years of age, Gallant and Doucette have the world of music at their fingertips, and Story of a House Fire is a strong start for the duo.
