Somewhere between the sensuous crooning of Chris Isaak‘s “Wicked Games” and The Tragically Hip‘s “It’s a Good Life if you Don’t Weaken” is Christina Martin‘s “Impossible to Hold.” Taken from Martin‘s album by the same name, the new video features the Nova Scotian artist blurring the worlds between singer-songwriter and aggressive real-estate agent determined to sell you this to-die-for property, even if it means breaking out William Shatner’s power moves.
That being said, both the video and the song have grown on us, but in a way that leaves us suspicious that it’s preying upon our nostalgia for the ’90s. But what doesn’t these days? Those were simpler times. Nobody had ever heard of a man bun. Our tv heroes were wholesome. The economy was in great shape. We had more time to pose around the house and indiscriminately hand out meaningful gazes…
Despite the strong ’90s vibes, the song is spiritually more akin to Delaney and Bonnie‘s 1969 hit “Superstar,” which was made most famous by The Carpenters. With “Impossible to Hold,” Martin sings of the exquisite yearning of infatuation and adoration.
“I always daydreamed over meeting the great makers of the music I loved: Stevie Nicks, David Bowie, Annie Lennox or Tom Petty. What I know about great art is it allows us to feel a closeness and connection that transcends the need to physically hold onto someone or something,” explains Martin.
Martin says that “Impossible to Hold” came together shortly after a particularly poignant experience at a Carole King concert in the UK.
“At the age of 75, she performed her most cherished songs with an undeniable passion and excellence. The experience reminded me of the power that music has to affect people so profoundly.
It’s hard for me to put in words, but performing ‘Impossible To Hold’ makes me feel closer to the source of where the music and drive comes from. It makes me feel like I’m connected to something bigger.”
You can catch Christina Martin at her upcoming performances this fall throughout the Maritimes.
