Music Video: Little Cities Stand on the Cusp with ‘These Days’

Charlottetown’s Little Cities are on the cusp of releasing their first proper EP. Having already released two singles from the six-song Friends Floors, including “First Impressions” and “Girl Next Door,” but what’s one more? Today they’ve give us another tease with an unconventional lyric-video for “These Days.”

Rather than a pop punk nod to vintage rockers Nico & The Velvet Underground or Canadian songwriting legend Ron Sexsmith (nods we’re desperate to hear), Little Cities instead  chose to pay homage to Loverboy.

“It’s essentially our take on the ‘Working For The Weekend’ concept; pushing through the day job you hate in order to make it to the club/bar to finally unwind,” explains Josh Pitre, the band’s synth player.

The track is full of the sort of anguish one experiences as young adult: the desire to be out living it up, but also the slow understanding that we have bedtimes for a reason. There’s definitely more emphasis on the former than the latter, but to be fair, this is coming from a pop punk band who are still young enough to burn the wax at both ends.

“You’re in your element – all of the stress and worry of your ‘day life’ is gone. The chorus touches on the dread and disappointment of having to leave that environment, knowing you have to go back to the grind again,” explains Pitre. “But in the end it’s all worth it to be able to finally let loose. This one may not be for the bartenders, although we do love and appreciate what they do .”

As the band explain, though may not yet fully appreciate, it’s all part and parcel with coming to terms with the next phase of adulthood. It get’s easier to accept once you’ve experienced hangovers in your thirties.

Little Cities will be releasing the debut EP, Friends Floors, on September 28th, 2018.
