Long live the glory of the 90s! Dartmouth’s Designosaur are proving, that despite the decade’s advanced age, it’s still thriving as a musical genre. The three-piece fuzz-punk band are one more feather in the Maritime’s proverbial cap, proving that while things might be a little slow to change here, we also don’t have to.
“Runaway” is short and sweet, and it’s packed with responsible on-brand rebellion. As the song says, we’re not running away with reckless abandon, but to someplace we’ve already been. For all we know, that means grandma’s house for tea and biscuits.
The song was written by friend and former bandmate Joel Langis (Bad Nintendos, B+ Players). Langis was formerly the frontman for a band called Rex Splode, which featured a revolving cast of musicians backing him up.
AJ Boutilier, Designosaur’s vocalist and guitarist, and Sean Parsons, Designosaur’s drummer, were in the last iteration of Rex Splode in 2015. One song that both Boutilier and Parsons loved playing and decided to carry forward was “Runaway.”
“Our friend Joel Langis […] is one of the best songwriters in Halifax. We thought it’d be cool to cover one of his songs since its one of our favourites,” says Boutilier.
“Its very reminiscent of older 90s alternative bands like Eric’s Trip. It’s such a simple repetitive song but it’s super catchy.”
While “Runaway” is Designosaur’s debut single, the band have a 4-song EP on its way.
“It’s all recorded,” says Boutilier, “I just have to put the finishing touches on it and then we’re going to try our luck getting it on vinyl if we can. This is still like months away. Realistically the earliest that it may get pressed is possibly January if we really get moving.”
Designosaur will be playing at The Cathartics circus shows at Gus’ Pub September 12th, as well as performing at Nova Scotia Music Week in Truro this year.
