Braden Lam has released a brand new music video in preparation for his Driftwood People album launch coming up on September 14th. With a runtime of 1:58 (it worked for The Box Tops), “Halifax Girl” is a perfect little taste of what the young singer-songwriter has in store for us.
With a shore at sunset and a bedroom-turned-recording studio-turned-projector backdrop as our setting, Lam spins a brief tale about a breathtaking lady he’s met during his newfound life on Canada’s East Coast after arriving from Ontario. He describes her in such ways as “saltwater heart,” “Cape Breton in her blood,” and “eyes like the tide”; we Nova Scotians really love our oceans.
With influences such as Hey Rosetta!, Dallas Green, and what sounds to us like a touch of Matchbox 20, Braden Lam already possess a certain quality of stardom. Gentle percussion and drifting string arrangement help to guide us to the emotions that this east coast girl evokes in him. But alas, isn’t that always the story?
The video ends with Lam waking up from a deep sleep, beach still projected on his bedroom wall, before flopping back onto his bed in the most disappointed fashion possible. It leaves us wondering if it was all a dream, or if Braden was perhaps taking a trip down memory lane to a better time.
“The song quite literally captures a funny exchange between my mom and I where she told me that I better not move away from home, find some East coast girl, and never come back again,” says Lam.
“When writing the song I actually described a very real relationship where I had actually thought of spending the rest of my life with this person and what that would look like.
The story worked off of what my mom had told me into what actually happened in the relationship and describing the girl, and then a bit of dreaming into the future before I wake up from this dream and realize the whole thing isn’t real and wasn’t meant to be. Which is what happened in real life with this relationship too.”
Braden will be promoting his new album with a tour across Atlantic Canada, backed by his band, The Driftwood People. A list of tour dates can be found down below.
