If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump too? That’s what Rachel Beck asked of her friends in the production of her new video for “Hearts On Fire.” The Prince Edward Island musician and her friends leapt into 4°C for the sake of our entertainment (and probably the bragging rights).
Beck explains, “at its core, the song is about living in the moment and doing those things that give you a rush—whether it’s falling in love or leaping off a bridge.”
To sufficiently document a literal sense of that statement, Beck enlisted director (and apparent sadist) Jenna MacMillan to force Beck and her friends off a bridge with the business end of a camera pointed at them.
Followed by an evening on the beach with fireworks, “Hearts On Fire” is full the desperate whimsy of Spring.
“We wanted to do something a little wild and spontaneous to represent breaking away from the daily grind,” says Beck. “It was a rush!”
“Lindsay and Stephen are always up for an adventure! But the moment before the jump when we were standing there freezing…I think we all felt some hesitation. After all, the water that day was 4 degrees Celsius. I remember hanging onto the rail and saying, ‘This is absolutely the dumbest idea I have ever had!'”
Mind you, Beck explains that the video was more than a reckless plunge; there was a van at the ready with the heat already blasting.
“So it was a ‘quick jump, blankets, van’ sequence.”
