Rothesay-born rising star Jaryd Stanley released his latest single last Friday. After last year’s release of his debut album Sixteen Ten, the multi-genre musician shows his unique spin on the love-song trope with the release of “Take Your Time.”
Starting with the peaceful plucking of guitar strings, Stanley’s lyrics quickly follow, shaping the song into a message for a loved one. It champions the idea of love being a team effort, with messages of equal parts giving and taking and, as the title suggests, patience. Musically, Stanley’s clever notation can fool listeners into thinking he may have ended the verse, only to follow up with yet another line. This helps to put the auditory spotlight on his lyrics, which in turn highlights his healthy messages.
His second verse takes a more humorous, blunt approach, giving the idea of comfort between two people. With lines like “I laugh at all your silly jokes / no, they’re not always funny” and “you can wear my favourite shirt / though it’s much too big,” one simply has to appreciate the simplicity in the lyric’s messages, discussing little situations that all couples are bound to experience for themselves at some point.
The third verse hits home with another overarching theme of being together forever, with a line that touches on parenthood, repeating the word always, and saying that the person is, metaphorically, “the reason I breathe.”
Stanley already has his foot in the door of fame. The Toronto-based New Brunswick boy has the title of Fan Favourite from CBC’s 2017 National Searchlight songwriting competition and was also the 2017 Grand Prize Winner of Canada’s Walk of Fame Emerging Artists Music Mentorship Program. He also appeared on CTV’s The Launch, where he, along with several other artists across Canada, was mentored by Fergie of The Black Eyed Peas.
The only way is up for Jaryd Stanley, and “Take Your Time” is sure to help navigate that particular flight.
