Rozalind MacPhail has been busy. The St John’s based ECMA-winning artist is the first-ever Canadian flutist to be sponsored by the Gemeinhardt family, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of flutes and piccolos. She’ll be touring this Spring for a series of performances and workshops, showcasing and teaching her unique skills as looping flautist at Long & McQuade locations and schools throughout Atlantic Canada.
MacPhail isn’t hard to recognize in Atlantic Canada. She was recently nominated for the ECMA Electronic Recording of the Year, the same award that she won in 2017. She was MusicNL’s winner of the 2016 Female Artist of the Year Award. Her work can also be seen as part of Homeless a short film by Raven Blue, Jeff McLennan, and Cara Cole about the transformative experiences and what it’s like to grow up in Saint John.
MacPhail says that for her the tour is an opportunity to do something completely different and refreshing.
“The tour is unique because what I do is unique,” says MacPhail. “I’m lugging audio-visual equipment (a projector and a screen) and my sound system around Atlantic Canada to inspire audiences, stores and classrooms as I give folks a real audio-visual experience. Driving from St. John’s on Saturday with my first stop in Gander.”
“With the support of Gemeinhardt, L&M and making waves of flute looping goodness… Lots of driving and with a full setup! Projector, screen, PA system…. and shitloads of Gemeinhardt flutes!”
“It’s not so unusual that L&M would be involved in a workshop series but Rozalind’s ACT is quite unique,” says Andrew Beazley, Long & McQuade’s Regional Manager for Atlantic Canada and Director of Educational Services.
“The idea that she would be able to show other flutists – and wind instrument players how easy it is for them to use software and a microphone to start making loops and layering effects and record electronic music in the same ways guitar and keyboard/synthesizer can. And whatever level you approach it’s just another way to be expressive on your chosen instrument and it can be a fun way to add interest to your practice session too. So there are a lot of reasons to promote this kind of music making. Plus Rozalind’s a dynamic presenter so full of enthusiasm and a fantastic, creative performer. It’s just plain entertaining.”
