Lawnya Vawnya: An Exposition of Independent Art & Culture is returning to St. John’s, Newfoundland for its eighth year this May. The festival presents some of the most innovative local, national and even international independent music. In addition to the music, the festival is offering panel discussions, artist talks, a film screening, readings, the record and press fair, pop-up shows and the always popular all-age music crawls.

This year’s headliners include 2018 Juno award winners and four-piece indie pop machine Alvvays, Montreal-based soulful indie rock band Land of Talk and Toronto-based psychedelic multidisciplinary band Yamantaka//Sonic Titan fusing noise, as well as Clairmont the Second, Bernice, Rae Spoon, Booji Boys, Sorrey, Easmon McGrath, and Maylee Todd.

The festival will also feature performances from Strongboy, Mark Bragg, Gramercy Riffs, Botfly, The Kubasonics, Lo Siento, Conditioner, Jane Blanchard, Kira Sheppard, Family Video, Trouser, Weary, Yee Grlz, john, Greta Warner, Cicerone, Rube & Rake, Land of the Lakes, The Van Buren Boys, Albert Dalton, and the Renee Sharpe Show.

“I’m especially excited about our big opening show with Alvvays. Also Land of Talk, Yamantaka Sonic Titan and Clairmont the Second. The latter two have yet to play in NL. I am also really excited about a film screening we are putting off in partnership with the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival called Play Your Gender,” says Executive Director Chrissy Lee.

According to Lee, the festival’s namesake is an old NL expression that means “to have a good time at a dance or a party with plenty to eat.” And that is clearly what the organizers have set out to provide downtown St. John’s with during this event.
