Prince Edward Island’s Sorrey is getting ready to unleash the follow-up to their 2015 award-winning dream-pop EP Thick As Thieves. Today they’ve given us a taste with their single “Go Get Ahead.”
Emilee Sorrey, the name-sake behind the band, explains that things have changed a bit for them since 2015. Back in 2015 they released Thick As Thieves completely DIY-style, “No support, out-of-pocket, designing images and bios myself, the usual DIY musician stuff. I never really thought much would come of it without a proper release and the learn-as-you-go approach.”
“But the EP got noticed and was really warmly received by the music community on the east coast. At that point we had a solid band consisting of myself, Andrew Murray, Willow Bell, Colin Buchanan, and Thayne Campbell. I considered myself a very lucky girl to have those fellas join me, and I still do.”
The band went off to accomplish great things in that time: playing gigs like Halifax Pop Explosion, Sappyfest, Evolve , M for Montreal, Stereophonic, Paddlefest, Shivering Songs, Flourish. They also made a mark at the East Coast Music Awards and the Music PEI Awards.
The EP received eight Music PEI Award nominations over the course of two years (taking home awards in the pop/urban album of the year category), and was nominated for and ECMA in 2016.
The band announced their return to the studio and the release of a new album back in April 2017 with their ‘Slow Chunk’ single.
“We’ve been working on writing and recording what will be our first full length album since then.”
Sorrey says that her approach has changed only slightly since their debut release,“But I’m still writing from more or less the same place: personal experience. I think before, I was coming from a place that was more jilted or hurt, writing about people who slighted me or experiences that were difficult for me to go through, and also pointing blame. I feel the newer songs are more -omgIcan’tbelieveI’mabouttosaythis – YOLO in their theme.”
“The theme of surrender definitely comes up a lot, almost in a hedonistic way,” says Sorrey about the newest track. “I have been writing odes to people, songs with advice, songs about just doing whatever the f you want to do so long as it feels good in the moment.”
Sorrey also announced yesterday that they’ve signed as the first band to join Halifax/Toronto label Garment District Records who will be releasing the band’s new LP this Fall. The band is currently planning a tour that will take them to Toronto and back.
