When TUNS debuted with their acclaimed self-titled last year, it was but a Polaris Music Prize nominee. Those things come with long lists. This year, they’ve earned themselves a real feather in their cap with the release of their new single, ‘When You’re Ready’, and the announcement that the song will be featured in multiple episodes of the upcoming CBC/Comedy Central show Crawford.
Comprised of Chris Murphy (Sloan), Matt Murphy (Super Friendz, Flashing Lights), and Mike O’Neill (Inbreds), TUNS formed in 2015 for an all-star benefit show at Massey Hall, but have a history that goes back twenty years as veterans of Halifax’s music scene.
The supergroup attribute the imminent success of ‘When You’re Ready‘ to a heaping helping of harmonies and slide guitar. On the other hand, they feel it’s been a long time coming.
“When The Beatles were starting the recording sessions for what was to become Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, their label needed a single, so they used ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane,’ which meant they would not be on the album,” says Chris Murphy.
“Producer, George Martin, considered it to be one of the biggest mistakes of his life. TUNS recorded ‘When You’re Ready’ during the same recording sessions as our 2016 self titled LP but left it off the album and we would like to think that George Martin rolled over in his grave.”
The song will be appearing in several episodes of new dysfunctional family comedy series, Crawford. Created by Trailer Park Boys writer/producer Mike Clattenburg and TUNS’ own Mike O’Neill, the show will be launching on February 2nd, 2018 via CBC’s online player at cbc.ca/watch.
And as a bonus, TUNS also shared a live video today of their song ‘Mind Over Matter,’ filmed in the basement of Royal Mountain Records for the video web series Custom Kitchen.
