Saltwater Films have released a trailer for their short film production, ‘A Blessing From the Sea’. Intended as a proof of concept for the feature-length film ‘A Small Fortune’, written by Adam Perry, ‘A Blessing From the Sea’ tells the story of two Prince Edward Island moss harvesters who stumble across a boatload of money that washed ashore after an open-water drug deal gone wrong.
Writer and director Adam Perry says that the upcoming release stands out amongst short films for one very obvious reason. “Not many people make teasers for short films,” he explained, “but because we have an all-star cast, we decided we could get some momentum going.” Indeed, ‘A Blessing From the Sea’ features notable Maritime actors including Jonathan Torrens (Trailer Park Boys), Lennie MacPherson (Jiggers), and Bryde MacLean (He Only Knows) amongst others, promising a compelling performance.
Regarding the premise of the film itself, Perry had plenty to share. “Our goal from the get-go was to write a story that connects to a lot of people (…) the story of the Average Joe finding a large sum of money is something a lot of people can connect to. If you’ve ever bought a lottery ticket or dreamed of winning the lottery, you’ve been there.”
The film’s Maritime roots shine clear from the gorgeous PEI scenery alone, but the Island was a source of personal inspiration for Perry as well. “My uncles and my grandfather and my father, they were all out there in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s to rake in moss, but they’d also rake in other things that would wash up on the shore. (…) there’s always all this treasure washing up so it wasn’t that far out of the realm of possibilities that a boat or a bag of money could wash up.”
While no fixed release schedule has been confirmed as of yet, the movie is going to be released on the movie network some time in the fourth quarter of 2017, and will also be sent out to film festivals around Canada.
