“Tonight,” the new single from Rachel Beck’s upcoming album, Stronger Than You Know, is more than just a love song about “surrendering to the moment and embracing unexpected love.” Arguably, it is exponentially more, or at least greater than the sum of its parts. The song plays off of real-life story of Adyn Townes’ grandparents featured in his song “Churchill” in a what-if scenario.
“Longer story: I did some tour dates with Adyn Townes a while back and absolutely fell in love with his song ‘Churchill’ and the incredible story behind it,” explains Beck. “His grandparents met overseas during the war and had this whirlwind romance, but they both had people waiting for them at home. They agreed to meet at the clocktower in Piccadilly Square on a given date if they wanted to run away together. They did, and they had a long, beautiful marriage. He tells it a lot better than me, obviously. Anyway, it’s this beautiful, romantic story.
“‘Tonight’ is, in part, an answer to his song. What if his grandparents didn’t write home to the partners that were waiting for them and start a new life together? What if they only had one night?”
The song swells under Beck’s piano, backed by the Atlantic String Machine, for a emotionally bittersweet delivery of a tale that borders on tragic. This scenario certainly wouldn’t have ended well for Adyn Townes.
Rachel Beck’s sophomore album, Stronger Than You Know, is rather ambiguously set for release sometime “later this year.”
