Kurtis Eugene returns with the beginnings of a new album and the “double single” of “Global Water/Icy Water.” In his uniquely unusual manner of esoteric wanderings, Kurtis captures a feeling rather any sense of structured song, manifested through half-whispers as the two singles bleed back and forth across each other.
Kurtis Eugene pairs the two singles via one track, or a ‘double’ if you will, in an attempt to digitally represent the A/B dichotomy of a vinyl release. Kurtis explains that it is exactly the idea of a vinyl release he had in mind when composing his latest work, and one of his long term goals. More than a vanity project, Kurtis says the idea of vinyl is a way to engage with the audience in a time-honoured and hearting-warmingly familiar ceremony. “a way to ensure that some of his listeners will be able to participate in the ritual of selecting the album, pulling it off the shelf, placing it on the record player and maybe even flipping through the album art.”
“I write music as medicine for myself,” says Kurtis Eugene. “Until this album, I had been recording and composing a work that is present in chaos, pain and suffering. I put it on hold because it stopped reflecting what I need right now. There is always going to be pain and I am always going to be able to relate to that music, but Cardinal offers the point of view that there is something more than all that, something else with it, some light. During it’s composition, I lost a loved one to the some of the same struggles that I have faced in my life. I wish I could have offered him this music and this music has become a dedication to him.”
Kurtis Eugene’s forthcoming sophomore album, Cardinal, is scheduled for released in June, 2020.
