Dave Sampson’s latest single, “Gets Me Through the Night,” goes drums first through this love song all about waking up to your person of choice like every morning is Christmas day.
“Your smile makes waking up alright,” sings Sampson with a sentiment that I typically reserve for coffee. Sampson’s charismatic vocals leave us wishing we could wake up to this picture perfect scenario each morning. Where us mere mortals are greeted by an angry alarm clock and a drool crusted pillow, Sampson arises each morning to sunrays and pixie dust.
Opening with some heavily sustained piano, the song quickly shifts gears as the real hero of the track takes over: that big beat that’s going to make a crowd pleaser out of this danceable country hit.
It’s like Hallmark and Folgers got together to make a baby and Dave Sampson’s “Gets Me Through the Night” is what came out instead.
Written by Sampson, Dylan Guthro (Port Cities) and Nashville-based Canadian singer-songwriter Sam Ellis, with Nashville with Gordie Sampson producing, “Gets Me Through the Night” comes from Dave’s upcoming album, All Types Of Ways, which is set for release on October 4th, 2019.
Just ahead of the single’s release, Sampson snuck out a live acoustic performance vide of the song, recorded at Coup De Tete Hat Makers / Dust Leather in Toronto, ON filmed by Mitch Fillion of Southern Souls. The live version trades out the drums for the resonance of his solo guitar.
“I mean, it’s a straight up love song,” laughs Sampson. “I think when I was writing it I was just about all the little things in a relationship that make it special. Things that only you and that other person know and share together.”
It sounds like if what you share with another person is a lifetime of quiet Sunday mornings, you’re not doing half bad.
