You’ve already heard the new single from Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth, at least if you haven’t been living under a rock. The band have been performing “Fortune” while they’ve been tearing up festival season all over the Canada’s East Coast. They’ve been having a real go at it, and living it up. Just like they say: “Fortune favours the bold.”
“I wanted a song that screamed rebellion and revelry. Lyrically it went in the direction of sheer recklessness, facing demons and burning the candle at both ends,” says Jamie Comeau, the band’s frontman. “It switches to the predatory wants and needs, and the hopes of earning ones approval, but knowing damn well you don’t suit the normality.”
“It’s a song for the outcasts. The cigarette smoking, whiskey drinking, ruffians ready to gamble their money away, knowing damn well life’s too short and we are not immortal.”
Comeau notes that, like several of the songs the band perform, “Fortune” was written before The Crooked Teeth had formed as a group. Penned back in 2017, Comeau put down in lyrics exactly what he was feeling at the time. Sounds like it paid off.
“I think when you play in a band,” says Nick LeBlanc, the Crooked Teeth’s guitarist, “you are greatly rewarded when you make big risks and put yourself out there. So, I think the lyrics can certainly resonate with a lot of us musicians.”
“That definitely has a play in the lyrics for sure,” confirms Comeau. “Fortune only favors the bold.”
If you haven’t caught them yet, Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth still have several more festival dates and shows lined up for the summer, with more to be announced.
