Single: Liam Corcoran Gets Grungy on ‘I’m A Wreck’

Liam Corcoran signals a left turn with his latest release, but quantum mechanics has taught us that every decision creates a new dimension where the opposite is true. The new direction Corcoran takes with “I’m A Wreck” might not be something you want to become attached to.

“My only intention with ‘I’m A Wreck’ was to make a scrappy, garage-y kind of recording that would honour the spirit of the song.” – Liam Corcoran

Every piece of art depends on composition. A song, much like a photo, must be framed properly. The focal point, must be set in an appropriate environment. In the same way, a song should capture the interest of those experiencing it like a well-written story.

Corcoran’s latest single is the product of such mastery. Its lyrics paint a picture of a walking shell of a human-being, set against a grunge infused indie-rock sound.

The song delves into the hopelessness of infatuation, giving insight into the thoughts of a person watching the doom clock run down on a relationship they wish to keep forever.

Corcoran creates the illusion of an empty shell with lyrics that claim he casts no shadow like a vampire, or a ghost. He further compares himself to empty spaces, or those with no light. These dark visuals are contrasted by pretty flowers that are difficult to forget. He displays the depth of this hopelessness by saying that the other party blocks out the sun whenever they’re near. Blinded by fear and love at the same time, Corcoran eludes to rampant negative thoughts, and unhealthy focus by “expecting to die” anytime he and his infatuee talk.

When it’s all put together this song feels timeless.

Although it’s unlikely we’ll see a new album released any time soon we can expect to see more from Corcoran in the next year, as he continues to redefine his music.

For those that have enjoyed his previous solo releases, and may be concerned about the change of direction rest assured there’s enough Liam to go around, or as he would say: “It’s starting to look like two different projects: one being pretty much solo acoustic and the other being more indie rock.”
