After the success of last year’s first public Pocologan Camp Party, the festival formerly known as the best worst-kept secret in New Brunswick are eager to get the word out that they’re doing it again. What started a decade ago as a family and friends campfire in the woods outside of Saint John has turned into an unstoppable party. We’ve got the exclusive details on who will be playing the Pocologan stage for 2019.
“I’m excited because we’re going to get to watch it all happen again – another amazing group of artists coming together along with a whole new set of fresh faces and new friends,” says Jeff Keleher, festival organizser. “The first timers are always my favourite part because the feel of the show is so heavily influenced by its audience, watching it morph and change over the years is one of the most appealing parts of doing this.”
“After keeping the party a secret for early ten years it was a big step to finally take it public last year. 2018 was such a success though, and now that it’s ‘out there’ we’re just excited to let more people in on the secret.”
As usual, the festival will run the gambit of genres; from its friendly lowkey afternoon vibe to its exciting headliners and DJs playing well into the night. Returning Pocologan veterans will also notice the addition of several vendors this year, providing plenty of delicious food options and more.
Opening the festival will be singer-songwriter folkstress Terra Spencer (who made our Top Ten for Best Music of 2018). We’ll see the return of Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth who stole the show last year. Dance punks Cursing & Swearing, Moncton indie rockers FM Berlin and Fredericton’s hottest electronic pop outfit Bleum will all be gracing the Pocologan stage for the first time.
This year, the big news is that Pocologan Camp Party will finally get to host East Coast festival favourites Slowcoaster and alt-disco stars Spoutnique as headliners.
“There’s just something about Slowcoaster playing your festival that seems to be an East Coast rite of passage. We’ve wanted to book them since day one,” says Keleher. “Having Spoutnique is just icing on the cake. We’re used to having a strong-booty shaking element to Pocologan, and we think Spoutnique can take that over the top this year with their unique brand of disco punk.”
The night will also feature DJs AnuBass, Fractal Code, Betsy White, Gold Punks and Maztradamus – the unholy mashup of Mazord and Elephant Skeletons. And, of course, there will be a performance from Pocologan Camp Party’s unofficial mascot: DJ Anteeq.
Pocologan Camp Party takes place August 17, 2019.
